New free2play shooter already has 230,000 players on Steam and hasn’t even been released yet

The Finals is a new FPS that lets you crush everything to your heart’s content. The open beta is climbing the charts on Steam, but the rush seems to be too much for the servers.

What kind of game is this? The Finals is a new first-person shooter that will be released as a Free2Play title on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The special highlight is that the environment in The Finals is almost completely destructible, so you can flatten entire buildings.

Thanks to special technology, the destruction is calculated on the server side and remains in the game for all players. This makes the piles of rubble tactically relevant. MeinMMO was already in the closed beta in March, during which The Finals showed the potential to become one of the best PvP shooters.

On October 26, 2023, the open beta started on PC and console with a new game mode and catapulted The Finals into the top 5 most played games on Steam. There was also a new trailer at the start of the open beta, which you can watch here:

Rush is too much for the servers

This is how well The Finals is received: In the first 24 hours after the start of the open beta, The Finals reached a peak of 143,000 simultaneous players. At the weekend the FPS even managed to have almost 230,000 simultaneous players.

The Finals is currently ranked 5th among the most played games on Steam, putting it in a league with established genre representatives such as Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds and Apex Legends (via Steamcharts, as of October 29, 2023).

The first votes are also positive. Comments under the trailer praise the feel of the game, the sound design and the developers’ openness to feedback (via YouTube).

  • Hazardous: Just got it [die Open Beta] played and am thrilled with how fluid the game feels. Big praise also to the sound design team […]
  • ethansparks8825: You can now destroy the crane! Scopes have also been added. The developers really listen to the community. Can’t wait to play again.
  • On X, formerly Twitter, you can discover first impressions and gameplay under the hashtag #REACHTHEFINALS. Here too, the players seem to be having a lot of fun. The only problem is said to be the servers, as they seem to be unable to keep up with the rush.

Developer Embark Studios introduced a temporary login queue while they work to expand their capacity (via twitter.com). There may be waiting times and crashes. Since the open beta was always intended as a stress test for the systems, this is also helpful feedback.

You can take part in the open beta until November 5th and get your own impression. You can register via Steam, the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store.

If you are not yet convinced, here is a detailed first impression from the closed beta including gameplay from 2 complete matches. However, keep in mind that a lot has happened since March, which is why not all information may be up to date.

How does a shooter play where you can destroy everything? Fantastic!
