New findings on Öland – there may be connections to the great massacre

Many sheep skeletons have been found in several of the post holes that supported the building in Gamla Skogsby near Färjestaden on Öland.

– In one of the posts we have found six whole sheep that were probably used as sacrifices to protect the house, Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay is a university lecturer in archaeology.

The Iron Age house in which the excavations are taking place is the largest on Öland and is over 35 meters long and approximately eight meters wide.

“The massacre during the same time”

It is a kind of hall building where very high-profile people must have lived.

– The massacre in Sandby borg that many people know happened during the same time. There were high-ranking people there just like here. So if there was a conflict between East and West on the island, this is a possible villain, says Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay, who is a senior lecturer in archaeology.
