New fantasy series about ghostbusters is the ideal Stranger Things replacement (and hopefully it won’t be cancelled)

Fantasy fans can rejoice, because Netflix will release a new series from the genre on January 27, 2023. From Attack the Block director Joe Cornish, Lockwood & Co is about youth ghost hunters in London. First reviews already sound promising.

New to Netflix: What is Lockwood & Co about?

The Netflix series is based on Jonathan Stroud’s book series of the same name, which consists of five volumes in total. The story revolves around two teenagers, Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman) and George Karim (Ali Hadji-Heshmati) in London, who start up together as Lockwood & Co. ghost hunting at night walk. Also new is talented girl Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes). The three of them discover a big secret.

In the Empire review, the new Netflix series gets 4 out of 5 stars:

However, none of this impressive world building, character development and storytelling would work if it wasn’t for the consistently intelligent, ironically funny dialogues would exist. Forget the Young Adult label; This is an addictive, sophisticated supernatural thriller that will keep cynical old whiners entertained throughout. (It helps that the 80s pop gothic needledropsfrom Bauhaus and The Cure to The Stranglers and Siouxsie And The Banshees, are put to good use.) Let’s hope the notoriously ruthless Netflix executives Lockwood & Co. give us more opportunities to please and intrigue.

All in all, Lockwood & Co is an appealing mix of noir-tinged detective, horror and low-key teen drama with just the right amount of witty banter. It is both somber and cozy and the TV equivalent of a weird old bookshop tucked away on a London back street. You can almost smell the dust – and we mean that as a compliment.

One can only hope that sounding like a coherent Stranger replacement replacement Lockwood & Co also gets enough time and is not canceled prematurely by Netflix again.
