New employee got hand crushed – LKAB risks fines

The accident occurred during a bolt reinforcement work. A bolt fell out of the machine’s nut sleeve and the newly hired, who was under introduction, went in front of the machine to put the bolt back in the sleeve.

The supervisor stayed in the machine cab.

“When the supervisor maneuvered the bolt machine, to adjust its location, the front drill support was automatically closed, which resulted in the newly hired clamped/crushed hand,” the prosecutor’s account states.

Supervised without education

The prosecutor considers, among other things, that the mining company neither has given the supervisor nor the newly hired sufficient instructions. The supervisor had not undergone supervisor training and the work itself was also not considered to be sufficiently risk assessed.

Therefore, the prosecutor issues a company fine for work environment crimes of SEK 400,000, this in the form of a criminal offense.

“The company has not done what could reasonably be required to prevent crime.”

If LKAB does not approve the criminal offense, the prosecutor may prosecute and the case is tried by the court instead.
