New edition of a cult series that has disturbed millions

When was the first time you were scared while watching a TV show? I’m not asking for shocking news or dramatic medical dramas, but for horror. For many, the answer will be the 90s series Goosebumps – The Hour of the Ghosts, which disturbed children all over the world on TV from 1995 onwards. From October 13, 2023, the new edition Goosebumps will be available on Disney+. How much nostalgia and horror does it offer?

Disney+ brings back horror cult goosebumps with a Stranger Things feel

Just like its predecessor, the new Goosebumps is based on the horror books by RL Stine (Fear Street). Unlike the 90s cult, this is not an anthology series with one completed story per episode. Rather, the series follows a five-member teenage clique around Margot (Isa Briones), who has to solve a dark secret.

The heroes of the new Goosebumps series

Margot and her four friends stumble across the tragic story of young Harold Biddle (Ben Cockell), who burned in a fire many years before. His vengeful spirit now haunts the town, and English teacher Nathan Bratt (Justin Long) appears to be as caught up in his retaliation as the teen troupe’s parents.

Until the streaming start, the new Goosebumps series received above-average reviews, as Metacritic shows. It combines beloved ideas with a fresh approach, writes Slashfilm. According to IGN, the horror remake loses the fun of the original, but offers it Nostalgia factor based on Stranger Things and well-played characters.

Ryan Gosling in the old Goosebumps series

Anyone who feels like revisiting the old Goosebumps series should pay particular attention to the early appearances of two later stars: Both Ryan Gosling (Drive) and Stars Wars actor Hayden Christensen can be seen as teenagers in two episodes.
