“We have been counting sea eagles in the area for 45 years and never before have we had as many as now,” says Nils Waldemarsson at Nordöstra Skåne’s bird club to TT.
This year’s count is in line with recent years’ counts in the area, where the number of observed individuals has increased. Last year, a total of 75 sea eagles were counted in the area, which includes the municipalities of Kristianstad and Bromölla.
The sea eagle, which is Sweden’s largest bird, went through a period of crisis in the middle of the 20th century as a result of the release of environmental toxins. Thanks to Projekt havsörn, where volunteers, among other things, delivered food to the birds, they managed to reverse the trend and today things look much brighter.
— Things are going well for the sea eagle, today it is estimated that there are around 900 pairs in Sweden, says Nils Waldemarsson.
And the good growth in north-eastern Scania is probably no coincidence.
— We have a known wintering area for the sea eagle that has existed for a long time and where there is mostly access to open water and food in the form of fish and geese.
