There hasn’t been a new Star Wars film since Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker and it will probably be some time before that next chapter of the star saga conquered the big screen. Still, there’s one film this year that could fill the big gap Star Wars has left in cinemas: The Creator.
The Creator is the new directorial effort from Gareth Edwards, who directed the 2016 hugely popular Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Now he tells a new sci-fi story and brings half his Star Wars team with. Get ready for the perfect blend of Rogue One and The Mandalorian.

The Creator takes place in a future where war has broken out between mankind and an artificial intelligence. The ex-soldier Joshua (John David Washington) is supposed to bring down the architect of the AI and bumps into it android childwhich can change the course of history forever.

Instead of Pedro Pascal, who travels through the galaxy far, far away with Baby Yoda, John David Washington, known from Tenet, takes the role fate of a young creature which is of great interest to several hostile factions. The images of cameraman Greig Fraser, from whom we will see another sci-fi blockbuster this year: Dune: Part Two, provide a lot of Rogue One vibes.
Composer Michael Giacchino also returns from Rogue One. Edwards has also teamed up with production designer James Clyne, who has previously worked on Solo: A Star Wars Story and many other sci-fi films. So there are quite a few people behind The Creator Star Wars names not to be underestimated. This is going to be a very special film
Sci-Fi Highlight 2023: When does The Creator start in cinemas?
The Creator launches on September 28, 2023 in German cinemas. Disney is releasing the film under the 20th Century Studios banner. Dune: Part Two follows about a month later. The next Star Wars film is slated for release in December 2025. Due to the current strike situation in Hollywood, however, it is unclear whether the schedule can actually be met.
