US researchers have found a link between Covid infection and cancer regression, leading to tumors shrinking in size. Using animal and human tissues, scientists observed that RNA molecules of the disease-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus trigger the development of a special cell in the immune system that has anti-cancer properties.
According to scientists, these special cells, known as ‘inducible non-classical monocytes’ or ‘I-NCMs’, attack cancer cells. Scientists who found that cells activated by severe Covid-19 can be stimulated with a drug to fight cancer stated that they received answers especially for melanoma, lung, breast and colon cancer.
Scientists also shared the information that although the research is still in the early stages and has only been examined in animals, it gives hope that the approach can be used to benefit patients with advanced cancer that does not respond to other treatments.
