The opposition, which started on November 27 and made significant progress in Syria in a short time, managed to overthrow the Assad regime by taking Damascus. This development in Syria means the opening of a new page in the Middle East. Important developments continue to occur both within the country and in the region. One of these developments concerns Russia, which is a supporter of the Assad regime. Here are all the details!
THEY ARE LEAVING THE MEDITERRANEAN ONE BY ONE!
New satellite photos from the Tartus Naval Base on the Mediterranean coast revealed the withdrawal process of Russian Navy ships from Syria.
Images show the warships leaving Moscow’s only overseas naval base and anchoring off the Syrian coast.
Three Russian Navy guided missile frigates and at least two support ships were in the port of Tartus on December 5, according to photos from satellite provider Maxar.
On Tuesday, these ships left the port.
WHAT ARE THE RUSSIAN SHIPS AT TARTUS NAVAL BASE?
According to Naval News, the base was home to two Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, an Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate, and an improved Kilo-class attack boat.
“THE MOST MODERN SHIP IN THE FLEET”
The frigates Gorshkov and Grigorovich are the most modern surface ships in the Russian fleet. Both can deploy the long-range Kalibir land attack missile and the Tsirkon hypersonic anti-ship missile.
The withdrawal of the ships is part of Russia’s withdrawal from Syria following Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
ISRAELI ATTACK WAS ALSO DOCUMENTED
Photos from Maxar also show an Israeli attack on Syrian missile boats at the naval base in Latakia, about 50 miles north of Tartus.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the army attacked the remnants of the Syrian flotilla in the port on Tuesday.
Defense Minister Israel Katz said that the Israeli Navy carried out the attack.
TARTUS NAVAL BASE AND ITS IMPORTANCE
Tartus has long been an important base for Russia in the Mediterranean and a logistics hub for its naval forces on board.
Built by the Soviets in the early 1970s, the base was rarely used after the Cold War until Russia invaded Crimea in 2012.
Tartus hosted ships used for Russian operations in the early days of the occupation of Ukraine.
The Russian air base in Tartus and Latakia became important centers for supporting Russian operations in Africa.
