Arizona gets a Democratic governor. Meanwhile, the Republicans are closing in on a victory in the country’s House of Representatives, having won two districts in the state.
Katie Hobbs has won the gubernatorial election in Arizona in the United States, according to the AP news agency’s forecast.
Hobbs was up against Trump loyalist Kari Lake, a former news anchor who falsely claimed the 2020 election was rigged. The victory means the state now has a Democratic governor, after incumbent Republican Doug Ducey was barred from running for re-election.
Lake is a controversial figure, who has been vocally critical of the state’s slow vote count and who has promised to “fix” the electoral system as governor. Two more suffragettes in Arizona lost their elections, for state governor and for the US Senate, respectively.
Hobbs thanks his constituents via Twitter.
“Democracy is worth the wait,” she writes.
However, the state is not completely democratically blue. Two Republicans have won their districts and become members of the nation’s House of Representatives, bringing the party stumbling close to a position of power there.
It is still not entirely decided who will take power in the lower house of Congress, where all members are elected in mid-term elections. With the victories, the Republicans now have 214, against the Democrats’ 204. It takes 218 for a majority. Republicans hold the lead in seven of the remaining 17 where it is still too close to call a winner.
