CD Projekt Red has confirmed that a new Cyberpunk 2077 animated project is on the way in collaboration with Netflix.
Although the details of the project have not been announced yet, the return to the Cyberpunk universe in animated format has excited fans. During CD Projekt Red’s recent earnings presentation, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said of the project: “I am also very happy to announce that we are working on another animated project set in the Cyberpunk universe that will be released on Netflix.”
More than 30 Million Sold Cyberpunk 2077 Animation Project Announced
This statement follows news that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 30 million copies and that the sequel will begin full development after The Witcher 4 (Project Polaris) is completed. An animation studio has not yet been announced for the new Cyberpunk animation, it is unclear whether Studio TRIGGER, which produced Edgerunners, will continue. However, it can be expected to be a production filled with impressive visuals, cool technologies and plenty of gore.
Cyberpunk 2077 has become iconic with its name rather than its game. Since its initial announcement in 2013, players have patiently waited for years for more details. With the re-announcement at E3 2018 and the announcement that Keanu Reeves would participate in the role of Johnny Silverhand, expectations were at their peak.
However, when it was released in December 2020, it became clear that the game was not ready for release at all. Game-breaking bugs and frequent graphical bugs made the game unplayable for some. Over time, as the patches were completed and the situation improved, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners spin-off series was released.
Created by the famous Studio TRIGGER, the producer of Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann, Edgerunners was about the experiences of promising young David Martinez in the dark and crime-filled Night City. Adored by gaming fans and others alike, the series has won numerous awards, including Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Despite this success, it seems that the new project Edgerunners will not have a second season.
On the other hand, thanks to the success of Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077 experienced a huge increase in the number of players, with 1 million people entering Night City after the anime. So, with a new Cyberpunk project, sequel, and live-action movie on the way, this could be another way for the series to reach the heights it originally aimed for.
