New co-op shooter on Steam has over 50,000 players but can’t keep up with the rush: “We’re in crisis mode”

The promising co-op shooter Helldivers 2 has just launched on Steam and PS5. But the release is overshadowed by technical problems. A patch should help.

What kind of game is this? Helldivers 2 is a co-op shooter in a sci-fi setting in which players can set out with up to 3 friends to inject democracy into nasty aliens. The title was one of our 10 most promising shooters for 2024 and was released on February 8, 2024 for PC and PS5.

Helldivers 2 got off to an impressive start on Steam: Not only was the shooter able to attract up to 64,000 simultaneous players, it also overtook the mega-hit Palworld and is currently in second place among the top sellers on Steam in Germany (via SteamDB, as of December 17th). :45).

But the actually successful launch threatens to be overshadowed by server problems and crashes.

The enemies in Helldivers 2 also include the powerful Acid Titan:

Developers want to make improvements with a patch

What is the situation with Helldivers 2? The shooter currently has a “balanced” rating on Steam: just 53% of players recommend the game in its current state (as of 6:00 p.m.).

Early players report constant crashes, problems with matchmaking and even the infamous blue screens. Others criticize the anti-cheat system and the in-game cash shop.

There will also be a detailed test of the game from our colleagues at GamePro.

How are the developers reacting? Johan Pilestedt, the head of Arrowhead – the studio behind Helldivers – has already contacted the players on the official Discord server. They say they are “a bit in crisis mode”.

According to Pilestedt, the large crowd at the start could have led to the technical problems – these errors remained undetected during the “many, many, many hours of testing”.

Initial attempts to fix the problems by developers have so far failed, according to the studio boss. The solution probably requires a patch. Pilestedt apologizes for this and thanks the community for their patience.

Finally, Pilestedt wishes the players a pleasant time in the game – as soon as they make it in.

What can players do? At the moment we just have to wait and see whether the patch can fix the problems. If you bought the game on Steam and haven’t played for 2 hours yet, you can also consider a refund so that you can give Helldivers 2 another chance at a later date.

Pilestedt himself advises players to first get together with other members of the community, because you can easily join friends’ games.
