New co-op game Wayfinder for Steam and PS5 mixes 5 genres in under 2 minute trailer

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The Game Awards 2022 are over and the winners have been chosen. In addition to the awards, there were also tons of new game launches, including the co-op game Wayfinder for PS5 and PC (Steam). MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus has looked at the trailer and is quite confused – but also very interested.

OK. What? Unlike my colleague Alex, who accompanied the live ticker for the Game Awards 2022 with all the live announcements at night, I pulled the zonk and had to turn up in the morning to work through everything.

Accordingly, I first looked at the most promising trailers for new games. Most of these are looking really good, especially Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2, Suicide Squad and of course Diablo 4 which finally has a release date.

And Wayfinder. The teaser image for the trailer already made me curious, but the video itself just confused me:

  • First of all a strange tower with a look like from Fortnite. OK, manageable.
  • Then a portal that kind of looks like Nightingale’s crazy ideas. What is the game going to be?
  • Gears and magic daggers – anything with steampunk? Cool, I like that!
  • Then a bridge in a cave. Return to Moria now?
  • Finally finally the playable characters with their skills. Sword carnage, swift daggers and fireballs against hordes of monsters. Nice! Such co-op shredders are just the thing. Plus a boss to top it all off. This is going to be good.
  • Now one of the guys is standing there in front of a sci-fi touch screen, choosing skills. Weren’t we just on Fantasy?
  • The same guy then pulls out a shotgun and heats up the enemies… what the hell?
  • More bosses, banging and a guy with a scythe – then the villain from the beginning suddenly uses some crazy Naruto techniques. Where are you going, Wayfinder?
  • After that, a lady reminiscent of a monk from Diablo 3 appears, falls into a berserker rage and beats up opponents with her bare fists. So Norse slayer monks are also in the game?
  • Finally, a medieval fantasy city with neon signs like in New York, strange glitches that are more reminiscent of the Matrix and tons of loot…
  • Seriously… what did I just see? Take a look for yourself and let yourself be confused:

    Wayfinder – Game Awards Trailer

    Wayfinders: Hero Slasher Co-Op Action?

The trailer makes me curious and I want to find out more. But the official website doesn’t really help. If anything, I’m even more confused. There is very little about the story at first.

“Become a Wayfinder and discover their power as you find your path and playstyle while pushing back an enemy force that has taken over your world.” Well, could say exactly the same for Diablo, replacing Wayfinder with Nephalem.

What looks really interesting are the classes. You can see 5 characters so far, all of which seem to have 3 skills and a kind of ultimate. It’s a bit reminiscent of League of Legends and isn’t a bad thing. And at least I know now that the berserker monk lady is a competitor.

In addition, the gameplay should consist of dungeon crawling, hunts and co-op battles as well as crafting, improvements and even housing! That sounds like something. How exactly that fits into the world, I still don’t know. But at least it is revealed that there are seasons. Cool… I guess?

The FAQ also says that every character will have full voice acting and that a beta will start on December 13th, for which you can register using a form. I’ll do that right away because I want to know what Wayfinder really is and if it plays as cool as it sounds so far.

The release is then scheduled for spring 2023 for PlayStation and PC, without an exact date yet. In return, the game will be a Free2Play title. I’m excited to see what will come of it.

By the way, my highlight of the Game Awards was – not surprisingly – Diablo 4. I’ve been looking forward to the game for years and the first tests are really promising:
