New childrens choir program launches in Simcoe

A new choir program is being launched for children of all vocal levels in Norfolk County.

Trinity Anglican Choir School will begin September 18 and will run every Tuesday evening until Christmas. Children will be taught vocal skills, hand signals and how to read rhythm by using the Kodaly method of music education.

“We are all qualified music educators and qualified to teach. This is an affordable choir for parents. This is something that the children can join and experience a really good program for a minimal fee,” said Gena Norbury, music instructor for the Trinity Anglican Choir School.

“No child will be turned away even if they are not singing perfectly on the pitch,” she said. “All children can learn if they are guided by the right voices.”

The program will have children divided into three age groups. Con Brio Cherubs will cover children from ages 5 to 8 and will cost $15 per child for a term. The class will run from 6 pm to 6:30 pm

Con Brio Singers are children from ages 9 to 17. The class will cost $20 per term and will run from 6:45 pm until 8 pm

Con Brio Chamber Singers is an auditioned class for students who have previously attended the Con Brio Singers. The class will charge no extra fee and will focus on more advanced methods of music. The class covers the ages 12 to 17.

One concert will be held per term at Christmas time and in the spring unless invited from outside groups or organizations to perform.

Students will be taught different levels of music in accordance with their age group.

The extra fee covers a workbook and writing material, which will be provided for the children.

A meet and greet vocal placement will take place on June 28 at Trinity Anglican Church in Simcoe, where families can register their children for the class and meet with Norbury to get an insight into the children’s singing level.

Norbury and her husband Kevin both have professional backgrounds in music. Norbury previously worked as a music teacher at the Peel District School Board for 32 years. Kevin is music director at Trinity Anglican Church in Simcoe.

Registration can be done at the vocal placement or by email at [email protected]. For more information, call 519-586-7833.
