New chief appointed for Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department

A familiar face has been appointed chief of the Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department.

Petrolia and Enniskillen Township said Friday Rick Cousins, current deputy chief of fire prevention, will take over as chief in January, following the retirement of Jay Arns.

“Rick has the heart to lead this organization well into the future,” Judy Krall, Enniskillen’s deputy mayor and chairperson of the fire committee, said in a news release. “His caring and nurturing nature will provide strong support to our firefighters, and to the residents that the department serves.”

A firefighter for more than 35 years, Cousins ​​started out in Brigden and moved in 1990 to the department in Petrolia. He became a captain in 2020 and a deputy chief in 2022. He also has been with the OPP auxiliary for 28 years.

“I have always loved the caring and generous nature of this department and I am proud to take on a leadership position to ensure that the team remains strong, well-trained and ready to assist as needed,” Cousins ​​said.

The department, which serves Petrolia and a portion of neighboring Enniskillen, will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2024.

“Rick brings a passion to firefighting that has been exceptionally clear throughout his career in Petrolia and Enniskillen,” Joel Field, deputy mayor of Petrolia, said. “We are pleased to have him lead the organization.”
