New building game on Steam is reminiscent of Anno, but revolves around the Cthulhu cult, is 90 percent positive, offers free demo

Worshippers of Cthulhu is a building game that will be released on Steam this year, in which you lead a Cthulhu cult and perform dark rituals. A demo is already available. The first reviews are almost exclusively positive.

What kind of game is Worshippers of Cthulhu? The construction game from Crazy Goat Games makes you the leader of a Cthulhu cult. Your goal: to summon the old god himself. To do this, you must gather followers around you and create a city from nothing.

Feed your followers, monitor production chains and organize workers. To do this, you proclaim dogmas, hold festivals and perform dark rituals. All non-believers serve as potential victims and slaves.

What else is known? The final release of Worshippers of Cthulhu is scheduled for sometime in 2024. You can already download and install the demo on Steam. Although it only has 103 user reviews, 90 percent of the ratings are positive – which earns it a “Very Positive” rating on Steam.

  • T.TV/ScaveBoy writes on Steam: “From what I’ve seen in the demo, I’m excited. There are very few Lovecraft games where you can control the entire cult.”
  • Mafestic Twelve praises on Steam: “The demo was fun. Assuming the theme stays the same and they continue on the path they’ve taken but make it a bit more robust, then it could easily be one of my top building sims. Think Tropico, but mythical.”
  • But there is also criticism. Yoda complains on Steam: “The game is heavily inspired by Anno/Tropico and essentially plays like a mod for it. There are a few potentially interesting gimmicks, but overall even Anno Vanilla (without DLCs) feels vastly superior.”
  • Yoda goes even further in his post and specifically criticizes the low-poly models and poor textures, the UI that could be improved, and the gameplay that is quite simple compared to the aforementioned role models. However, the resulting low barrier to entry is also praised by other players of the demo.

The Anno comparison can also be found in many other reviews. The authors are often delighted with the unusual mix of Anno structure and the cosmic horror vibes of the Cthulhu setting inspired by HP Lovecraft.
