New building game gives you complete freedom when building

The medieval building game Foundation from Polymorph Games appears on Steam after 5 years of early access. The announced release date of January 31, 2025 has fans excited. Above all, the promised freedom when building plays a major role.

What makes the new building game special? Foundation is a building game that focuses on medieval environments and buildings. You build buildings from small huts to massive monuments, take care of resources and the needs of residents, and design the environment in which all of this takes place.

Polymorph Games names their sources of inspiration on the game’s website, which include the Anno series, the Settlers and SimCity. The studio wanted to create an authentic city building simulation that has been generating enthusiasm for years thanks to its freedom of construction.

In addition to the art style, the Foundation release date trailer also showcases the building and city construction of the building game.

How does the game want to ensure as much freedom as possible? Foundation relies on as few restrictions as possible when building and designing its buildings and environments. The game therefore does not use a grid system, which can usually ensure more order and a straight design, but also limits implementation.

By foregoing such a system, Foundation not only wants to offer more creative freedom, but also enable organic expansion to represent the real growth of medieval cities in the past (source: Polymorph Games).

What can players expect at the official launch? Foundation has been in Early Access since February 1, 2019, over 5 years. After the planned 1-year duration, this was extended “by a few additional years” because the relatively small development team still wanted to deliver exactly the game they had in mind.

With the full version on January 31, 2025, additional content such as new buildings, production chains and living spaces, aesthetic revisions, modding options and deeper narrative content will appear. So far, only 60% of the planned content can be seen in early access.

What is the fan reaction to the long-awaited full version of the game? Although Foundation has only been in Early Access so far, the reactions on various social media channels and the reviews on Steam are very positive (87% of around 14,000 reviews). Numerous fans express their anticipation:

  • Devilish Simmer comments on Steam: “I’ve been following this game since its first year in Early Access. It was a great development process, with a team that really listened to feedback. (…) I hope that development and improvement will continue after release and the game will be further expanded.”
  • ShadowSpade says on Reddit: “I love gridless building. It kind of spoiled other builders where you have to place roads for me.”
  • RoboHo-BO comments on Steam: “I don’t want to start a turf war, but Manor Lords wishes it was Foundation. This game makes city management fun and it looks great (Manor Lord’s realistic graphics with this polished and fun gameplay would be unstoppable).”
  • If you don’t want to wait until January 31, 2025, you can play the free demo of the full version on Steam. The aforementioned Manor Lords is also a medieval building game that has many parallels to Foundation, but above all has a more realistic art style visually.
