New Brantford committee will support major sports teams

A committee that will provide support to Brantford’s major sports teams was struck at a council meeting on Tuesday, June 27.

count. Dan McCreary received unanimous support for a motion calling for the formation of a committee. His motion said “maintaining positive and businesslike relationships with our major sports teams ensure retention of our existing teams and serves to attract new teams.”

“The resolution mimics something we did a number of years ago where we had a two-member committee that dealt with some of the concerns and issues of our major sports teams,” said McCreary. “It proved to be highly effective and beneficial.”

While McCreary said it hasn’t yet been decided which teams the committee will liaise with, he said it wouldn’t include minor sports or house league teams, but likely Jr. C and up.

The resolution originally called for the committee to include councilors McCreary, John Sless and Richard Carpenter, with Mayor Kevin Davis as ex-officio.

After Coun. Rose Sicoli suggested the committee should include a female member, it was decided the members would be Carpenter, McCreary and Coun. Mandy Samwell.
