Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro is suspected of having planned a coup in connection with the 2022 election, writes NEW.

Brazilian police have carried out a raid against 25 of his employees during Thursday, the newspaper writes.

Bolsonaro was ordered to hand over his passport, not to leave the country and to refrain from contact with the outside world.

The police’s accusations relate to him having conspired to retain power regardless of the outcome during the election. He is said to have personally written a proposed arrest warrant against a Supreme Court judge and to call new elections after the loss.

He is also accused of spreading information about electoral fraud, recruiting the military to support the coup attempt and monitoring judges.

“Bolsonaro and dozens of associates, ministers and military leaders collaborated to undermine the confidence of the Brazilian people in the election and created the conditions for a potential coup,” said Brazilian police, according to the NYT.
