The Disney remake Little Mermaid splits the fan community with various changes compared to the original. Many old fans will welcome a difference with a view to the well-being of younger viewers. The infamous horror scene in the castle kitchen from the first Ariel, the mermaid is only hinted at in two small moments.

Arielle has been disturbing children with a horror scene for 34 years

When Krabbe Sebastian (German narrator: Joachim Kemmer) makes it into the castle of Arielle’s (Dorette Hugo) prince swarm Erik (Frank Schaff) in the original, he witnesses a horrible spectacle. A cook chops up dead fish there, rips their bones out and cooks them in boiling hot water for immediate consumption. He sings a song to it because he enjoys it so much.

A possibly normal sight in every star kitchen. But for sea creature Sebastian, whose friends also include fish Fabius (Tobias Thoma), it is one grisly display of a cannibalistic act. The scene is just as disturbing for many young viewers who root for the cartoon’s sea creatures.

Maybe that’s why Disney decided to omit a corresponding scene in the remake. The casual cannibalism of the Arielle world is only hinted at in two short scenes: Firstly, the seagull Scuttle (Maria Hönig) eats a fish, although she socializes with his fellow Fabius. On the other hand, you can also see the castle cook slitting open a fish in the new film. But only briefly.

It is to be hoped that the children in the audience of the new Ariel film will leave the cinema with an entirely positive experience. How many fans the original has spoiled the fish consumption, is not known.
