Norfolk General Hospital recently recruited a new anesthesiologist.

Dr. Mark Levitan began practicing at the hospital last October. Anesthesiologists are required for surgery, assist in intensive care unit and provide obstetrical care.

Levitan earned his medical degree at the University of Ottawa and completed his residency in family medicine and anesthesia in Northern Ontario through the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

“After residency, my fiancée and I explored various rural towns in Ontario that were looking for an anesthesiologist,” said Levitan. “We decided that NGH was the best fit for us in terms of its location, the amazing community and the hospital.”

Levitan said he is impressed by the hospital’s surgical program, along with the beauty of Norfolk County.

“Norfolk County is beautiful and we are excited to continue exploring it this summer. We are particularly drawn to the beautiful trails and beaches, as well as the fantastic breweries, wineries, restaurants and cafes. There are plenty of events and activities to get involved with and the community has been extremely welcoming.”

Norfolk General’s talent acquisition team continues to recruit physicians across Canada to meet growing community needs.

“Recruiting physicians and specialists to Norfolk General Hospital continues to be a top priority,” said Dr. Robin Martin-Godelie, chief of staff. “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Levitan to our hospital and community. We know there is a national and provincial shortage of anesthesiologists and we are grateful that Dr. Levitan chose to work at NGH. I have no doubt he will help enhance the patient experience.”

A community assessment report done in 2022 indicated there are 63 physicians per 100,000 population in Haldimand Norfolk. This compares to 115 physicians per 100,000 population average in Ontario.
