For the third time in less than a month, Taiwan has received an American political visit.
On Sunday, Republican Governor Eric Holcomb landed on the island, CNN reports.
“I appreciate the warm welcome I have received from Douglas Hsu, Taiwan’s Minister of North American Affairs,” writes the Indiana governor on Twitter.
The official reason for Holcomb’s visit to Taiwan, according to his office, is that a Taiwanese company that manufactures semiconductors is to open a branch in Indiana. He will later also visit South Korea.
On Twitter, Holcomb further writes that he “is determined to build an economic future with these global partners”.
On Thursday, China warned the US to continue developing trade exchanges with Taiwan, and reiterated that the country will “defend China’s territorial integrity”.
“We urge the United States not to make the wrong decision,” the State Department wrote in its warning, according to Reuters.
China last week announced new military exercises around Taiwan after a group of American politicians arrived on the island.
That meeting came less than two weeks after the high-profile visit by Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. Her trip to Taiwan drew strong reactions from China, which launched several days of large-scale military exercises around the self-governing island, which Beijing considers its own territory.
