“Never experienced this before”

Frida Karlsson can end her career with the 2027 World Ski Championships in Falun.
But now comes the giant conflict that can change everything.
Sweden is now affected and may miss out on the championship, reports VG.

Two highly interesting championships await in the skiing world. Next season, the Skiing WC 2025 in Trondheim will attract a record crowd, then the Skiing WC 2027 awaits on Swedish soil in Falun.

Frida’s unexpected words

The Swedish ski star recently released Frida Karlsson a bombshell that it could be her very last championship in her career.
– There is more to life. I want to do so much – even if I don’t know exactly what I want to do then, said Frida in an interview with Expressen.

But now comes new information that can change everything and means that Sweden misses out on the championship in Falun, and the perfect end to Karlsson’s career. For the Norwegian newspaper VG reports that no agreement has yet been signed for where the World Ski Championships will be held in 2027.

Conflict in skiing

Pernilla Farmergeneral secretary of the Swedish Skiing Association, also admits that “details that we cannot go into remain” before the decision is hammered through.
– I can’t say an exact date, but we are working to get things through, she tells the Norwegian newspaper.

But now a huge conflict flares up in the skiing world and affects the Swedish national skiing team to the greatest extent. Finland has also refused to sign the agreement for its 2029 World Ski Championships in Lahtis.
– I have never experienced this before. This indicates that many organizers think that today’s agreement is more demanding than before, says the Norwegian Skiing Association’s director of events Terje Lund to VG.

Schism with Fis

The reason for the concern is a schism between the International Skiing Federation, FIS, and the national federations regarding television revenues. Previously, it was the host nation that was responsible for selling the television rights to the championships, but from 2026 Fis takes over all responsibility for the television broadcasts.

This leads to the future organizers of the Ski World Cup still being unsure of what the financial compensation looks like for championships after 2026. Several national confederations have also threatened to withdraw from all Fis competitions and instead start up their own super league in cross-country skiing.
– You as the organizer take on most of the risk. So you get a guaranteed sum from Fis for doing it – provided that Fis has all the television and marketing rights, says Norwegian Terje Lund in the interview.
