“Never experienced anything like this”

Armand Duplantis has been praised by the whole world.
But here comes the strangest tribute to “Mondo”.
In the form of a giant image in small Gimo.

The Swedish pole vault star Armand Duplantis can look back to a completely incomparable 2023. Another year where “Mondo” consolidated his position as a real world star in his sport and well on his way to becoming the best of all time.

Duplanti’s success

The 24-year-old bagged another World Cup gold last summer in Budapest but what was most impressive about last year was the double world records he broke with 6.22m to start the year and then 6.23m to end the outdoor season.

At the end of last year, Duplantis was once again named the world’s best male track and field athlete for 2023 and accolades from all over the world poured in for the young Swede. But these days, the most unexpected tribute to Mondo has also appeared – in little Gimo, outside Uppsala.

Paying homage to “Mondo”

Every year on January 13, the so-called “Knutmasso” is arranged in Gimo and it is a centuries-old tradition that the locals absolutely love. This year, the interest was record high when the event this weekend attracted thousands and Armand Duplantis suddenly ended up in the center of the action, see the picture below.

As tradition should, the parade through Gimo was the big event and this year’s crew with homemade carriages and costumes broke a new audience record.
– I have never been involved in anything like this, says Margaret Widén Berggrena prize giver, to UNT magazine.
– There were an incredible number of fine crews and dressed up this year. And there were close to 10,000 people on the street. It was a fantastic turnout. I have never seen so many people at Knutmasso before.

Forest crumb, wizards, a pink Barbie car and then a giant copy of Duplantis himself, see the picture below, were some of the fantastic creations in the parade. The winner was also the Mondo build, which is described as “one of the tallest and biggest old men the parade has ever had”.
