Fantasy fans have been waiting for this for decades, and now the time has come. Netflix is adapting the Sandman comics penned by Neil Gaiman (Good Omens) as a series. Many may have noticed an overlap in the first trailer for The Sandman. With the Amazon hit Lucifer the upcoming highlight shares the figure of the ruler of hell. And there is far more to it than the serial popularity of a religious character.
Netflix Fantasy and Amazon Highlight share the same Lucifer source
In fact, the Beelzebub character from the Amazon series (which was also produced by Netflix) is based on Gaiman’s comic book series. There the Lord of Dreams escapes from the captivity of a cult and regains power over his sleepy empire. Among other things, he meets Lucifer Morningstar, the version of the devil from the DC comics.

After the first Sandman trailer some fans were bothered by the recast of the character (via Screenrant ). Instead of Amazon Beelzebub Tom Ellis, the role was cast with Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie. Gaiman himself explained this fact as follows:

[Tom Ellis’ Figur] is from [den Comics] inspired, but at the end of the Lucifer series so far removed from the Sandman story that it’s easier for everyone to fall back on the comic book version. And so one does not know what our Lucifer is up to. When is horror fantasy The Sandman coming to Netflix?
The change is therefore not a ruthless act against fans, but simply due to the independence of the Amazon series. Fans will soon find out just how well Christie performs in her devilish role. The Sandman is running on August 5, 2022 on Netflix.
