Ugly – Don’t lose your face is still at the top of the Netflix charts. If the success of the sci-fi youth book adaptation continues, it is likely that the streaming service will soon order Ugly 2. After all, there are four book templates by Scott Westerfeld.
One big change to the first novel also changes the sequels and especially the role of Tally’s friend Peris (Chase Stokes).
The Netflix film adaptation Ugly completely changes Peris in 3 ways
In the future world of Netflix’s Ugly, teenagers get plastic surgery at the age of 16, which is supposed to make everyone more similar to one another. Main character Tally Youngblood (Joey King) has been waiting for this procedure for a long time. Her slightly older best friend Periswho is nicknamed Nose because of his unoperated Ugly nose, is even ahead of her in becoming “beautiful”.
When Tally sneaks into New Prettytown to visit him, he has also changed internally. He has even had the friendship scar on his hand removed. Nevertheless, she promises him that she will follow him soon by having an operation so that their friendship can continue.
Later, Peris visits Tally at home to persuade her, on behalf of Dr. Cable, to search for the escaped Shay and the rebel town of Smoke. With Tally’s earlier promises to Peris, he trumps her later vow of secrecy to Shay. So far, so true to the book. But then the Netflix film begins to change Peris’ character development.
The 3 biggest Peris differences between book and movie:
Pretty: What the Peris change means for Ugly 2 on Netflix
In the novel Ugly * Peris no longer plays a major role after the opening. In the second book, Pretty *, the childhood friendship between Peris and Tally breaks down completely and he does not appear in volumes 3 and 4. However, the Netflix film adaptation apparently has other plans for potential sequels with Peris.
Because just as the Ugly Film introduces Tally’s childhood friend as a character and deviates from his original, he will in the film adaptation as a longer-term roleEven though we learn that plastic surgery also changes the minds of the operated Pretties, he is “different” and more alert, which is what makes him predestined to be transformed into a Special in the first place. Later, during the chase, he seems to remember his friendship with Tally despite everything. So he is not the mindless fighting machine that Dr. Cable would like him to be.
Peris ends up falling into an abyss, but the question of his survival still remains. Firstly, we’ve seen the indestructible Specials walk through fire (so why shouldn’t he survive a deep fall?) And secondly, the film probably wouldn’t have introduced Peris as such a full-fledged, ambivalent character with dormant potential to be good if Ugly 2 hadn’t wanted to bring him back and convert him.
When will Ugly 2 be released as a Netflix sequel?
A sequel to Ugly has not yet been officially ordered. The high number of views suggests this, but the bad reviews, some of which have misunderstood the film, contradict this. So whether we will get Ugly 2 is still uncertainalthough the four books Ugly, Pretty, Special and Extra offer plenty of template material. In case of an order, we could probably 2026 expect a sequel. However, another film adaptation by the Ugly author will be released next year.
