Netflix series One Piece reveals creature thought to be unfilmable

In a few days, the Netflix series One Piece will finally start. Fans of the Straw Hat Pirates can’t wait to see which iconic moments and characters from the Eastblue saga from the acclaimed anime make their way into the live-action adaptation. Netflix has now revealed new images one of the most bizarre elements from the world of One Piecewhich we actually get to see: telesnails.

Netflix’s One Piece brings mutated snail phones to life

Tele Snails or Den Den Mushi are a special species in One Piece. Due to its telepathic abilities, the snail species is used by humans as a means of long-distance telecommunications.

Different types of teleslugs exist in the world of One Piece. So there are not only the heavy snails with a dial, but also smaller variants that can be used like a mobile phone. Here’s the first look at the living phones:

The first look at the telesnails shows again how much effort Netflix put into the One Piece adaptation and that the makers don’t shy away from crazy ideas from the template. Co-showrunner Matt Owens explains in a press release:

We didn’t want to avoid the strange elements that make up this world. We’re just telling the audience, ‘Hey, phones are snails in this world. That’s the way it is. Just accept it.’

Instead of bringing the little snail phones to life with CGI, several elaborate ones were made animatronic dolls prepared. Their appearance is even matched to their respective owners. For example, Marine Vice Admiral Garp’s (Vincent Regan) snail has a white beard.

One Piece fans are disturbed by the telesnails, but also enthusiastic

Although the Den Den Mushi correspond directly to their role models from anime and manga, they are disturbing with their realistic look – and human teeth! Many One Piece fans react to the first image impressions of the telesnails surprised and sometimes disgusted. Some already love them for exactly this reason:
