Resentment in the royal family: What is Netflix’s The Crown about?
The Crown has been running since 2016. The story begins in 1952 when Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, succeeding her late father George VI. The seasons then closely follow the Queen’s life, touching on various political developments, most recently Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as Prime Minister in the 1980s.
At the same time, the series deals with events from the inner circle of the royal family. For example, she follows the childhood of Prince Charles, the new king. Diana, Princess of Wales made her debut last season. These are all intimate, but of course fictionalized insights. However, the series was not always welcomed by the Windsors. Many high-ranking members of the royal family are said to be dissatisfied with the quite critical portrayal of the monarchy in Great Britain.
