Netflix Made 200M Fantasy Series That Was Completely Forgotten

No Hollywood studio or streaming service releases more series and movies than Netflix. Out of this mass come hits like Wednesday and Squid Game. But some series fly by more or less unnoticed – even expensive blockbuster productions. Do you remember Jupiter’s Legacy? The elaborate fantasy superhero series started exactly two years ago on Netflix. But did she really? Fans can’t remember her.

What was Jupiter’s Legacy about?

Jupiter’s Legacy is based on a well-known comic book template by Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar. The story spans a century. A sort of alternative Avengers group (if half the Avengers were related) banded together to form the Union of Justice in the 1920s. Now, in the present, the Union is about to collapse. Because the young heirs are not ready to take on the responsibility.

Sounds great, right? It could have been. But …

The chilling facts about Jupiter’s Legacy

  • The budget was reportedly $200 million: The original budget of $130 million increased sharply due to reshoots, as Boris Kit learned from the Hollywood Reporter. An investment of this size is unusual anyway. What made it worse…
  • Jupiter’s Legacy received only one season: Just a month after the start, it was announced that Netflix was canceling the series. So the budget cannot even be considered a long-term investment. The money just fizzled out. Just like the series from pop culture memory. (Further: Shame on Netflix! 10 Series Cancellations We’ll Never Forgive)
  • Fans are shocked that Jupiter’s Legacy exists

To mark the two-year anniversary of, well, the series’ “existence,” a fan took to Twitter this week to commemorate Jupiter’s Legacy.

The post went viral. Many fans hadn’t thought about the series since it started – or even not at all “never heard of”:

$200 million for a series that didn’t leave a significant footprint and only ran for one season? Many fans suspect, of course not seriously, that money laundering is behind the case.

“Was it filmed in the Cayman Islands?”

Jupiter’s legacy is still an example of a failed Netflix strategy: publish as much as possible as quickly as possible – and let’s see what sticks. Jupiter’s Legacy should therefore not be forgotten, but rather be a warning. Read our take on the series here: Jupiter’s Legacy suffers from Netflix’s chronic illness.
