Netflix is repeating a major Zack Snyder mistake with Rebel

After the studio debacle surrounding the four-hour version of Justice League, Zack Snyder is now raving about working with Netflix. Here he could let off steam like in a huge adventure playground and have more creative freedom. With Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire, the director has now laid the foundation for a new franchise, from which, in the best case scenario, a huge sci-fi universe grows.

However, a version of Rebel Moon was released on Netflix, which is obviously one shortened fuselage version acts. A director’s cut will be released later, which could be four hours long. I can’t believe Netflix is repeating the Snyder Cut debacle.

Rebel Moon is reminiscent of the messed up Justice League theatrical version

The current Rebel Moon version seems like an introduction that is too long, not only because the story is split into two films. In addition to the knowledge that the sequel, which will be released in April 2024, could round off or enhance its predecessor, Rebel Moon Part 1 is also coming like a carelessly cut-together economy version therefore.

The fact that violence is removed for a more mass-friendly FSK-12 version and blood is practically not seen at all is nothing new in cinema releases. Why a streaming service with a subscription system allows a tamer version to be created first and withholds a harder version in the form of a (not yet firmly announced) director’s cut is simply incomprehensible.

The Rebel Moon cut, which is currently available to stream, is reminiscent of the sloppy Justice League theatrical version smoothed out with inappropriate humor and less violence became. Due to the Joss Whedon reshoots and massive interference with Snyder’s plans, the film ultimately had little in common with Snyder’s original vision.

It makes me angry that Netflix is repeating the Snyder Cut mess

It’s no longer a secret that the Director’s Cut of Rebel Moon, like the Snyder Cut of Justice League, promises a completely different viewing experience. According to Comic Book Movie, Snyder himself said about the alternative version of the sci-fi blockbuster:

Much more brutal. More bizarre. Verhoeven-like. More RoboCop than you think… in the way he uses violence as another character. And there’s a lot of sex in it.

The director also teased that the R-rated version will be like another film in a different universe than the current Netflix version exists. So there’s a lot to be said for the fact that Netflix has treated fans of the filmmaker to a new Snyder Cut mess that many may not even know about.

This leaves me angry and with questions in my head:

  • Why does Netflix have an overly long version was not published straight awaywhich, like Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, corresponds to Snyder’s original ideas?
  • Why are fans of the director who loudly advocated for the director’s cut of another Snyder film again dealt with with an unfinished, cut-up compromise?
  • And why is Snyder allowed? are already praising the probably heavily changed Rebel Moon Director’s Cutwhen the (probably also messed up) FSK 12 version of Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scar Maker hasn’t even been published yet?
  • Why did Snyder sign off on this?
  • Maybe there will soon be more details about how this chaotic Rebel Moon situation came about or what exactly is behind it. In any case, Netflix’s strategy of splitting an inferior version into two feels like a bad joke that no one can explain.
