Netflixis rolling out plans to discontinue its cheapest ad-free subscription plan. The change will start in the UK and Canada first, before being rolled out to other countries.
Netflix App With Ads Will Launch in UK and Canada First
Netflix has started notifying users of the termination date via on-screen messages. One Reddit user shared a notification they received from the Netflix app: “Your last day to watch Netflix is July 13th. Choose a new plan to continue watching.” Users are advised to opt for the cheaper Standard plan (with ads) or the more expensive Standard or Premium 4K plans.

In the UK, users are being notified that their Basic plan, which costs £7.99 per month, is ending and they can now pay £4.99 for Netflix’s subscription plan with ads or £10.99 for the Standard plan. The £10.99 plan offers 1080p streaming, simultaneous viewing on two devices, and downloads on up to two devices. The Standard with Ads plan offers 1080p video quality but includes ads while streaming.
Canadian subscribers are also receiving notifications about the expiration date of their Basic plan. In Canada, the Basic plan is increasing in price from $9.99 to $16.49 for the Standard plan. Alternatively, users can choose the Standard plan with ads for $5.99.
In the United States, the Basic plan, which costs $11.99 per month, has not been available to new subscribers since last year. Netflix said on its earnings call in early 2024 that it plans to phase out the Basic plan in some countries, starting with Canada and the United Kingdom. Netflix said in May that its ad-supported streaming tier had 40 million monthly active users globally, up 35 million from a year ago.
