The Pride Month has begun and to start with we have a special recommendation for you that follows in the footsteps of great coming of age series like Euphoria. The Netflix series Heartbreak High takes you into the chaotic teenage years at an Australian high school and is everything that Sex Education tried to be in its final season ‒ and for many failed at: a completely uninhibited Gen Z-fest, teeming with iconic and queer characters.
Love and suffering at an Australian high school: Heartbreak High is coming of age chaos of the 2020s
The Netflix series revolves around various students at an Australian high school who maneuver their way through the turbulent phase of life called adolescence – and all this in the middle of the 2020s. The format is a reboot of the Australian series of the same name that conquered television in the 90s.
Between more contemporary and new characters, friendships are formed and broken up, people fall in love and separate, Identities are sought, found and redefined.

Heartbreak High
In the midst of the chaos, two best friends, Amerie (Ayesha Madon) and Harper (Asher Yasbincek), find themselves, whose intimate relationship is suddenly on ice after a fateful and alcohol-fuelled evening. Together with Amerie, we try to put the puzzle pieces of the night back together and Harper’s Secret to reveal a story that seems to have changed the young woman forever.
At the same time, we get to know some of her classmates and their loves and sorrows. At the forefront is the non-binary person Darren (James Majoos). And Darren is so fearless and uncompromisingly queeras we have rarely seen in the world of film and series. Darren takes a liking to the sensitive bad boy Cash (Will McDonald), who is just discovering his asexuality.
Heartbreak High fills the hole left by Euphoria and Sex Education
Queer and diverse characters from the TikTok generation, who Sex Education forced to change schools in its last season and thus lost the focus of its main characters, can be found in Heartbreak High from the beginning and thus fit more naturally into the series structure. It is loud and colorful and insanely exaggerated. But the series does not pretend to be anything else – and is therefore as bizarre as it is authentic.

So the series comes just in time to fill the gaping hole that Euphoria and Sex Education have left in our coming of age hearts. Because as it currently looks, a third season of the hit series led by Zendaya will never reach us – while Sex Education ended last year with a fourth season.
Heartbreak High has had 2 seasons to date. And if you have binge-watched the 16 episodes, you can already look forward to more. Because a 3rd season has already been confirmed for the Australian teen series. It is expected to reach us 2025 on Netflix and is intended to bring the coming of age chaos to a conclusion.
