On Netflix you can watch Groundhog Day to see a 90s cult film that has lost none of its charm to this day. Bill Murray shines as the sarcastic main character and has to escape a seemingly hopeless situation.
And groundhog greets you every day on Netflix: That’s what the cult film with Bill Murray is about
Bad-tempered TV reporter Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is forced to present Groundhog Day in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. A snowstorm that forces the TV crew to stay there an extra day doesn’t exactly improve his mood.
Especially when Phil discovers the following day that he has apparently mysteriously gotten into a time loop and now has to relive the hated Groundhog Day over and over again. Since no one believes him, Phil is forced to find his own way out of the predicament, which has turbulent consequences.
And sarcasm greets you every day: Bill Murray dishes out wonderfully entertaining things in the cult film on Netflix
The film begins predictably: There is Phil, a bad-tempered television star who only sees those around him as targets for his biting asides. And there is Rita (Andie MacDowell), his quick-witted colleague, who Phil wants to get closer to, but instead scares him away. And there is a friendly, quirky nest with people who are far too happy (for Phil) in which they are stuck.
But then something happens which gives the lively comedy an exciting mystery element: Phil ends up in said time loop and is forced to relive Groundhog Day repeatedly.
For us viewers, this means that Phil’s already sarcastic streak explodes completely and the desperate television reporter peppers his unsuspecting people one line after another. It’s almost painful in some places, but it’s very entertaining.
The dry dialogue works excellently. A wonderfully evil Bill Murray delivers, but at the same time manages to let his character’s vulnerability shine through.
But of course that’s not the end of it. Because Phil doesn’t want to come to terms with his fate in Punxsutawney and tries to escape his strange prison, increasingly creative – and also more insane.
The groundhog not only conveys a good dose of dry humor, but also raises exciting questions: Is there really such a thing as providence? Or are we free in our decisions?
Phil finds his own answers – and maybe even a way to return to reality.
And Groundhog Day premiered on February 4, 1993 and is currently available as a Netflix subscription.
