It has been clear for half a year: Netflix is filming the classic game BioShock. Now the director has also been confirmed, as Deadline reports. That’s how the experienced blockbuster veteran Francis Lawrence (Hunger Games, I Am Legend) is supposed to take care of it Sci-Fi Project To take care of. He is the preferred candidate. But hopefully Lawrence is also aware of what he signed there.
Too brutal? Pirates of the Caribbean director saw the BioShock film adaptation as a risk
Because Bioshock will be a major project. An attempt at adaptation failed 13 years ago because of these ambitions. At that time, the process was already well advanced, but was slowed down again when the committed Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski noted that the project might be a bit too ambitious. In an interview with Collider, he said of a studio meeting at the time:
My first meeting with Universal on BioShock was strange. I said, ‘Hey guys, this is a $200 million R-rated (FSK 16) movie‘. Silence. My agent said, ‘why did you say that?’ And I was like, ‘Because it is’. Why should we kill the movie before we start it? […] I wanted to make that clear. […]
This was followed by lengthy negotiations about the budget and target group and finally the project fizzled out. Because around 2010 they closed Mainstream fitness, brutality and horror still out in the eyes of many studio managers. Bioshock seemed like too much of a risk.
Not all fans think Netflix’s BioShock movie is a good idea
How much money Netflix is putting into the adaptation is not yet known. But the signing of Hollywood big name Franchis Lawrence bodes well.
Nevertheless, there are doubts among fans of the game whether a film adaptation is even a good idea. Many see the gameplay as a key factor in BioShock’s success, not the story or style that a movie could replicate. When the film comes to Netflix, is not sure yet anyway. Filming will take some time to start as Francis Lawrence is currently busy with the Hunger Games prequel.
