Woman received thousands of calls and messages
What was going on back then? In the first episode of Squid Game, the protagonist Gi-hun receives a business card that had an eight-digit number on it. As it turned out, if you put the South Korean area code 010 in front of it, it was a real phone number.
This area code is automatically added to calls from within the country, which meant that a Korean woman suddenly received thousands of calls from curious fans who wanted to know what would happen when she dialed the number.
In an interview with the Korean site Money Today, the woman, Kim Gil-young, revealed the extent of the telephone terror: Since Squid Game was broadcast, I have received messages and calls around the clock.
The woman said she had been using the number for over 10 years and couldn’t just change it because she was using it for business. However, the constant calls made it difficult for her to live her daily life.
She had to delete over 4,000 numbers from her cell phone. I get calls day and night out of curiosity, with no sense of time, so my cell phone battery runs out after half a day, says Kim Gil-young.
She contacted Netflix and the production company Siren Pictures directly. The woman’s phone number was then removed from the relevant scenes and replaced with a different sequence of numbers.
The calling card can also be seen again in the current second season – but this time Netflix has ensured from the outset that there will be no further telephone terror.
