BODIES OF 6 HOSTAGES FOUND
Israel says it has recovered the bodies of six of the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza following the October 7 attack.
The Israeli army said in a statement that the bodies were found in an underground tunnel in the Rafah district on Saturday. The army named the hostages as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Staff Sergeant Ori Danino.
Army spokesman Daniel Hagari said the hostages were killed by Hamas shortly before the bodies were found.
The Hostage Families Forum, a group representing families of people held hostage in Gaza, has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “address the nation and take responsibility for the hostages,” according to the BBC.
“The delay in signing the agreement led to their deaths and the deaths of many other hostages,” the group said in a statement.
Angry hostage relatives called for a strike across Israel, and in the evening hours one of the largest demonstrations in recent years took place. In the capital Tel Aviv, with a population of 435,000, 300,000 people took to the streets.
NETANYAHU IS HAVING DIFFICULT DAYS
According to the news in Milliyet, Prime Minister Netanyahu, who formed the most right-wing government in Israel’s history and has more than one fascist minister in his cabinet, has been resisting the ceasefire for months by constantly bringing new conditions to the table, despite Hamas’ acceptance of the US’s ceasefire offer.
An official told CNN International that Netanyahu was concerned about the massive demonstrations that have spread across the country.
STREETS ARE A FIRE PLACE, GENERAL STRIKE HAS STARTED…
A general strike began this morning in Israel, demanding a ceasefire and swap deal by hostage relatives. The country’s largest labor union, Hisdatrut, and the Tel Aviv municipality are joining the strike.
Histadrut President Arnon Bar David announced that the entire Israeli economy would go on a general strike as of Monday morning. “I have come to the conclusion that only our intervention can shake what needs to be shaken. We have to reach an agreement. Agreement is the most important thing,” the union president said.
During the general strike in Israel, which started at 07:00 this morning, rail systems will not operate in Tel Aviv, West Jerusalem and Haifa, and vehicles belonging to major bus companies Egged, Dan and Metropolin will not be on the roads throughout the day.
In strike zones, even kindergartens will be closed, primary and secondary schools will be open for half a day. Hospitals and health centers will only serve emergency patients. Starting at 08:00, no planes will take off from Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport, Israel’s gateway to the world.
All major banks in Israel are on strike and major shopping malls are also closed today.
