Wednesday, a police officer was stationed outside a third-floor unit while other officers canvassed the area, looking for witnesses and asking nearby businesses for surveillance footage.

The injured woman was listed in critical condition Wednesday at London Health Sciences Centre, a hospital spokesperson said.

The woman and the accused were in a relationship, police spokesperson Samantha Wakefield said, adding the accused sometimes stayed at the woman’s home.

Investigators also found a dead dog with suspected gunshot wounds at the scene, said police, who are working Forensic Veterinarian Services to determine the animal’s cause of death.

The shooting – the city’s second of the year – came hours after Marc Roskamp was sworn in as St. Thomas police chief during a ceremony at the Joe Thornton community centre.

Investigators haven’t arrested any suspects in a Jan. 7 shooting that critically injured an 18-year-old who was shot inside his family’s home on Palm Street in St. Thomas. Roskamp said significant police resources have been committed to the case and he’s confidant charges will be laid.
