Nearly 40 killed in fighting in Colombia | News in brief

Armed groups have been fighting for decades for control of land in the border region, where a lot of cocaine is grown for the international market.

In Colombia, at least 39 people have died in unrest between armed groups, officials said on Friday.

The clashes started on Thursday in the border region between Colombia and Venezuela. Governor of the Norte de Santander region by William Villamizar according to the dispute is related to drug trafficking.

Because of the clashes, the country’s president Gustavo Petro announced that he would suspend peace negotiations with the guerrilla organization ELN.
