Among the countless consequences of global warming on wildlife is the drying up of the salt lake Tinsilt in easternAlgeriaLast week, 300 flamingo chicks were rescued there by volunteers, youngsters abandoned by their parents because of the drought.

Indeed, with its more than 20 square kilometers, the Tinsilt salt lake is normally one of the largest wetlands in Algeria. But this year, due to the drought, the size of the lake has considerably decreased.

A phenomenon that has caused many adult flamingos to flee. As a result, the parents have left behind unhatched eggs or young individuals who have found themselves defenseless.

A break in a puddle at a gas station

On social media, we see volunteers coming to the aid of young individuals. More than 300 pink flamingo chicks have been saved. Transported by truck, they can even be seen stopping at a gas station to quench their thirst in a puddle of water.

The birds in distress were able to be moved to another wetland, near Aïn M’lila, about fifty kilometers away. Some were even joined by their parents. But not all of them could be saved.

Once home to thousands of flamingos, Lake Tinsilt is now nothing more than a graveyard of dead birds on land cracked by drought.
