The finale of the 20th season of Navy CIS was recently shown on German TV. It was the very last episode in which David McCallum appeared Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard you can see. The actor, who played the coroner for 20 years, unfortunately died in September 2023 at the age of 90.
Since season 20 was already produced before his death, many fans wondered whether and how the crime series will deal with the actor’s death in the upcoming 21st season. An exclusive report from TVLine now reveals, as NCIS says goodbye to Ducky and David McCallum.

Ducky was the last remaining NCIS character who had been a permanent cast member since the beginning of the series. In the next season he will its own tribute episode dedicated. More precisely, it is the 2nd episode of season 21, the one in the USA on February 19, 2024 will be broadcast on CBS.

What happens to Ducky? The special episode will deal with the character’s sudden death and will be entirely dedicated to the legacy left by the coroner, who recently went on a major book tour. In a statement, co-showrunners Steven D. Binder and David North explained:
As a result, the team will learn about Ducky’s death and in his grief reflect on the memories of him. And as befits Ducky’s meticulous and compassionate nature, even after his death he still manages to solve one last crime with the team.
The script for the episode was co-written by NCIS actor Brian Dietzen, who has played Ducky’s assistant Dr. Jimmy Palmer embodied.
Whether there is a short one in the farewell episode Reunion with NCIS characters who have already left – such as Mark Harmon’s Leroy Gibbs – has not yet been revealed. However, fans should focus on “a very touching and special moment” set.
When will NCIS season 21 come on Sat.1?
Due to the Hollywood double strike, which has now ended, no series and films could be filmed for several months this year. That’s why NCIS didn’t premiere in the USA with new episodes in the fall as usual. Instead, a shortened one is used 21st season now on CBS from February 12, 2024 be visible.
