On July 27, the British government launched an extensive investigation tracing the history of the Channel Island of Alderney under Nazi occupation. The Germans built on this small territory, located in the English Channel about fifteen kilometers from the French coast, the only concentration camps on British soil during the Second World War. At least a thousand people died there, but the subject is still debated, because the extent of what happened on the island has long been hidden.
