The transition formalities took place quickly after the humiliating legislative elections for the outgoing government. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, whose People’s Alliance coalition did not win any seats, resigned this Monday, November 12 from the presidency. In the process, Navin Ramgoolam was appointed as the new Prime Minister. At 77, this veteran of Mauritian politics, at the head of the Alliance for Change, is now preparing to enter the government building.

The democratic tradition was respected with dispatch. 24 hours after his crushing defeat, Pravind Jugnauth presented his resignation to the President of the Republic of Mauritius, symbolic authority of the country’s democratic system.
The former Prime Minister met his last Council of Ministers in discretion, before leaving office.
People close to Pravind Jugnauth are also beginning to resign, notably the Police Commissioner, suspected of having stifled investigations and harassed the opposition.

Meanwhile, Navin Ramgoolam, author of a crushing 60-0 victory at the head of the Change Alliance, is preparing to make his comeback to power after three mandates in the past.
This return is for a historic revenge, because it comes after ten difficult years, marked by a travel ban and eleven prosecutions in various cases, ten of which were abandoned.
The new Prime Minister is now preparing the formation of his government and a thank-you rally for his supporters, in front of the government building in the capital.
