What is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet? A trailer for the new game from Naughty Dog was shown for the first time at the Game Awards 2024.
In the trailer we also see action-packed scenes in which Jordan fights a robot with her lightsaber. The whole thing is accompanied by a groovy 80s sound from the Pet Shop Boys.

Intergalactic was inspired by 2 sci-fi animes
What could the story be based on? In an interview, Neil Druckmann revealed that the game was inspired by 2 anime classics, which also come from the sci-fi genre.
On the one hand, they were inspired by the anime film Akira. The film is considered a milestone in anime history, with numerous films and series having been based on it. It is rated 8.0 out of 10 on IMDb.
In Akira, Tokyo was destroyed by a nuclear explosion and rebuilt as Neo-Tokyo. Shotaro Kaneda and Tetsuo Shima are in a gang and have fierce street fights. But when they land at a military base, one of them develops mysterious powers. Some scenes that also appear in Akira could already be seen in the Intergalactic trailer, as X-User LnL_spark shows.
And the second anime? Cowboy Bebop is such a good sci-fi series that it can even compete with real-life series. It has a rating of 8.9 out of 10 on IMDb. The anime revolves around Spike Spiegel and his team, who hunt criminals in space as bounty hunters. The earth is uninhabitable, so humanity is spread across several planets.
Here the inspiration is clearer: Jordan is also a bounty hunter in space. There could possibly be other things in the story that Naughty Dog copied from Cowboy Bebop.
Many other games were presented at the Game Awards. But it could be that one of them doesn’t even exist. Fans are reminded of The Day Before: A Game Awards game describes itself as a cat MMO, but fans believe in a second The Day Before
