National team icon Hedvig Lindahl ends her career – then the 41-year-old plays her last match

Goalkeeper icon Hedvig Lindahl ends her soccer career. She plays her last match on Saturday.

Hedvig Lindahls last match will be on Saturday when her Eskilstuna host Alingsås in Elitettan.

Lindahl had to leave women’s league club Djurgården in the middle of last season, and in March she instead signed a short-term contract with Eskilstuna United.

Now she chooses to end her career for good.
“It feels good to end a long football career here, with friends, as this is where the career really took off one day long ago. Thank you for giving me the gift of a dignified end to a long career, it is something I will always be grateful for,” says Hedvig Lindahl in a press release from the club.

Lindahl is one of Sweden’s most successful national team players of all time. She played 189 international matches over just over 20 years in the national team, with the Olympic silver in 2016 and the WC silver in 2003 as highlights.

Lindahl has previously also represented Linköping, Kopparbergs/Göteborgs FC, Kristianstad, Chelsea, Wolfsburg and Atletico Madrid.
