    Autism and neurodevelopmental disorders: a study of 15 key indicators

    The interministerial delegation for the national strategy for autism within neurodevelopmental disorders posted a questionnaire online in mid-November for people with autism and/or those with neurodevelopmental disorders and their families in order to obtain a clear picture of the various measures taken since 2018. The results obtained will also be compared with those recorded in 2019 in order to draw the necessary lessons. Through fifteen indicators, the idea is also to prepare the future national strategy 2023-2027 wanted by the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne. Thus, the survey is structured around five major themes that respond to the essential issues described by the families:

    1. The early childhood by questioning the diagnosis and the resulting support;

    2. The schooling with questions relating to the continuation of an education, taking into account the special needs of children;

    3. adult life with questions on employment, participation in cultural and sporting activities and on the adaptation of structures;

    4. The actor training with the issues relating to the training of parents, the consideration of the specificities of children and people by professionals in compliance with the recommendations of good practices of the Haute Autorité de Santé;

    5. The family satisfaction and people with questions relating to the preservation of the employment of the parents following the diagnosis, the impact of the disability on daily life, etc.

    A version of the questionnaire is offered in a shorter Easy to Read and Understand (FALC) format.

    The major challenges of the national autism strategy

    In France, 12 to 15% of children are born with a neurodevelopmental disorder. Hundreds of thousands of people – children and adults – are affected by these disorders today. The change in their quality of life under the effect of the national strategy dedicated to them is measured each year in an impact study conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the inter-ministerial delegation. Since 2019, around 12,000 people have responded regularly. What are the real challenges of these different national strategies for autism and neurodevelopmental disorders?

    • Improve research on all neurodevelopmental disorders;
    • Intervene early to set up a real follow-up and appropriate care;
    • A more inclusive school with the hiring of staff trained in the various developmental disorders;
    • Better identify neurodevelopmental disorders in adults and better support them;
    • Support caregivers.
