Respiratory allergy is not limited to a seasonal annoyance like pollen allergy but occurs in reaction to contact with a wide variety of substances. Focus on the main respiratory allergens.
The Asthma & Allergies association and its partners are organizing the 16th French Allergy Day this Tuesday March 22 to raise awareness of the largely underestimated impact of allergies on daily life and to encourage allergic people to take their illness seriously from the first symptoms and to act.
“For 16 years, French Allergy Day has been the main event to alert the general public to the scale and seriousness of allergies, and the explosion in the number of patients: in 20 years, the number of people allergic diseases has doubled and the WHO estimates that 50% of the world population will be affected by at least one allergic disease in 2050! Today, 1 in 3 people born after 1980 are allergic” underlines the association.
Allergy ruins life
“The very disabling impact of allergy on daily life and quality of life is a quantifiable reality for those affected: school and professional absenteeism significantly higher among allergic people, disturbed sleep with real consequences in terms of stress and fatigue, difficulty playing sports, impact on social life, etc. We know that allergies ruin life! We must therefore act by informing and reminding people that an allergy is never trivial.” explains Dorian Cherioux, vice-president representing patients of the Asthma & Allergies association.
A new Ifop survey carried out for French Allergy Day shows that only 28% of French people are aware that allergies are a daily handicap. 14% of French people are also convinced that it is a benign illness. Several allergy mechanisms also remain poorly understood: only 32% of French people believe that pollution can aggravate respiratory allergies. The French also underestimate the therapeutic wandering of allergies: you have to wait on average 7 years between the appearance of the first allergic symptoms and the consultation of an allergist.
