Nasty drama in the Champions of Champions final – which TV viewers never got to see: “The heart raced”

Nils van der Poel won the final of the “Master of Champions”.
But now the nasty drama that the TV viewers didn’t get to see is being revealed.
– What happens is that the heart races, ski profiler Jörgen Brink admits.

It finally happened Nils van der Poel who won this year’s season of “Champion of Champions” after an exciting final duel against Johan Wissman. But alongside all the joy for van der Poel’s victory, a scary drama is also revealed that took place in the final – but which the television viewers did not get to see.

The drama in SVT

Former cross-country skier Jorgen Brink was one of the four participants who had made it to the final program and during one of the branches needed the help of the healthcare staff. But nothing was shown in the TV show and now Brink himself tells what happened.
– I have these heart palpitations and fibrillation, which I have had for maybe 20 years. So I simply got a rush here, he says to the SVT presenter Mike Leijnegard.

Even during the active skiing career, the heart problems could affect and disturb Brink. It was also the explanation why he went into the wall completely and collapsed during the famous WC relay in Val di Fiemme in 2003.
– I had heart palpitations during the relay. It was lucky that I finished at all, he has explained before.

Brink explains

Jörgen Brink clarifies what happens in the body when the heart says otherwise.
– So what happens is that the heart races. It doesn’t fill properly and just stands and vibrates, or it becomes like a rush and goes more up and down like that. And it’s not good if you have to make an effort, he says in SVT.

After the 49-year-old received help from medical personnel on site, he was then able to continue competing in the final program. But unfortunately it was not enough to reach the final duel.
– It came a bit out of time, but it’s over and I’ve had to take it easy, says Jörgen about the drama.
