NASA launches experiment in which 4 volunteers simulate life on Mars – A genre on the PS4 was the best way to pass the time

With each new day, humanity learns a little more about space. Perhaps one day it will even be possible (and necessary) to resettle part of humanity on Mars. NASA is currently conducting an experiment to gain new insights into what life on the red planet might look like.

What kind of experiment is this? NASA created a 3D-printed habitat that isolated test subjects from the outside world. The goal of the CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration) mission was to gain information on the potential effects of long-term missions on Mars.

Lavacrete, a cost-effective, semi-liquid concrete mix, was used for the 157 square meter space.

Four volunteers signed up for the experiment and had to submit themselves to the following conditions;

  • The experiment started in July 2023 and ran for 378 days.
  • The guinea pigs had to grow their own food
  • They also had to work on simulated challenges, such as maintaining their own equipment
  • They lived with certain delays in communication to simulate the conditions on Mars

    • In a NASA podcast, the volunteers revealed that they didn’t just spend time together during work. The crew also started joint activities after work.

    Test subjects passed the time playing PS4 games

    What did you do in your free time? Once all the tasks were completed, the volunteers watched films or played video games. The crew had access to a PS4 and played a lot of world-building games. This genre includes Minecraft, for example.

    Kelly Haston, one of the test subjects, also revealed that they played a lot of standard games. She cites Formula 1 as an example. There were also other things to do: In addition to the PS4, participant Anca Selariu watched a lot of TV, read and painted (via The Guardian).

    What happens next? Two more missions are planned. Two more missions are scheduled to be launched from the same base in 2025 and 2027.

    After the missions, NASA plans to use 3D printing to build future space exploration settlements, saving the amount of building materials that would have to be transported to Mars over multiple flights.
