NASA has regained contact with Voyager 2

It was on Monday that Nasa announced that a mistyped command caused it to lose control of the space probe.

The error message instructed the probe to rotate the antenna 2 percent, which was enough to knock out communication.

Successfully contacting Voyager 2 was thought to be easier said than done, as it is 12 billion miles from Earth and it takes 18 hours for signals to reach it. The situation was not expected to be resolved until October at the earliest when it was scheduled to perform an automatic antenna reset.

But on Friday they had managed to send instructions that straightened the space probe. Nasa explains it as sending an interstellar “shout”.

Voyager 2 was launched in 1977 with the aim of exploring the outer parts of the solar system.
