Narges Mohammadi receives the Nobel Peace Prize

It was announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday at a ceremony in Oslo.

Narges Mohammadi, born in 1972, is awarded the Peace Prize for his “struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all” in the Iran of dictatorship and discrimination.

Narges Mohammadi is a trained physicist but has mainly worked as a journalist. As an activist, she has mainly fought for women’s rights and against the death penalty in Iran, where 576 people were executed in 2022 alone according to Amnesty.

– A fight for which she is currently imprisoned, says Nobel committee chairman Berit Reiss-Andersen.

According to the Nobel Committee, she has been sentenced five times to a total of 31 years in prison.

The chairman of the Nobel Committee points out that despite strict restrictions, Narges Mohammadi managed to smuggle out an article, which was published in The New York Times.
